Offline version of Gmail in the works?
According to the Hindustan Times, Google plans to release an offline version of Gmail. I think that it’s safe to assume that it would run on Google Gears, much like Google Reader’s offline feature does.
Obviously, the lack of offline e-mail reading is the one huge downside to using Web mail. If Google implements this correctly, it could be a pretty big deal, but we will see if the functionality of a browser-based offline solution can compare to an actual desktop client.
It should be noted that Windows Live also currently has its Live Mail Desktop client available right now…
Mortgage crisis to hurt online ads, say analysts
Several analysts are predicting that the mortgage crisis in the U.S. will ripple through to the online advertising market. One of the most popular types of online ads happens to be for mortgages. So the theory goes that if lenders have to cut their ad budgets, Google, Yahoo and other news sites and blogs will be pinched too.
In a research note on Friday, Sandeep Aggarwal of Oppenheimer & Co. spells it out: “Internet advertising is not immune to any potential cutbacks in ad budgets.”
The firm trimmed its financial estimates for Google, Yahoo and Bankrate last week and this…
Google says JewTube is not kosher
Apparently, Google doesn’t have a sense of humor when it comes to puns related to its YouTube video site.
The company is preparing to challenge the use of the name “JewTube” for a Jewish-related video site on trademark grounds, according to a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which was reported on by WebProNews.
A lawyer for NetParty, listed as the owner of JewTube, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. A Google spokesman said he was checking into the matter.
Meanwhile, Google rival Yahoo apparently wasn’t so bothered by Jewhoo, a Jewish-oriented blog. However, Yahoo did…
Google vs. Verizon: The ‘open access’ saga continues
First with Net neutrality and now with so-called “open access” rules for forthcoming wireless networks, there seems to be no end to the discord between Google and Verizon.
The latest evidence of tensions surfaced when Verizon Wireless this week quietly filed a petition asking a federal appeals court in Washington to “review” rules set to apply to an auction next January of the coveted 700-megahertz wireless spectrum. Earlier this summer, the Federal Communications Commission decreed that consumers must be allowed to use whichever mobile devices or applications they please on about a third of that chunk.
A number of consumer…
Taking your Web site ‘universal’
Search results, they are a-changing.
You may have noticed some changes in your Google search results over the last few months. These subtle changes are just a sign of what is coming, as Google continues to roll out its universal search results. While much has been said and speculated about universal search, its subtle reveal still leaves many site owners perplexed as to what it means to them.
In case you are just tuning in, universal search is a blending of the various “vertical” search properties, such as video, news, blogs and images, as well as the traditional search results…
