Cybersquatting comes from the term squatting, which describes the act of occupying a land, building or any other property without the knowledge or permission of the owner. In a sense, cybersquatting entails cybersquatters registering a company or a trademark for his domain name and forcing the company to buy the domain name by advertising it as the legitimate company site. In some cases, the domain name is used for posting derogatory remarks about the target company. The legitimate company’s only option is to buy the domain name at ridiculously high prices.

Legal Implications of Cybersquatting
Cybersquatting is still a hotly debated issue in the Internet as both sides can take advantage from laws about it. On one hand, cybersquatters say that cybersquatting is just one form of the free market and capitalistic principles. On the other hand, large corporations can take advantage of the law to steal domain names from people who had no intent of using the domain names in a bad way. This is called reverse domain hijacking and this concern arose in cases whose outcome heavily favored the big corporations.

In any case, complainant holders of the trademarks can go through the process of resolving domain name disputes using the Uniform Domain Name Resolutions Policy. This process, however, has been heavily criticized as it favored the trademark holders and large corporations. Complainants can also choose to go to court but this often presents the problem of jurisdiction and the different laws regarding the matter in different countries and involves a lot of money and time.

Upon winning the case, the complainant can either buy and maintain the payments for the domain name or leave it available, in which case, another person can buy it once again.

Cybersquatting Tactics and Strategies
To maximize profits, cybersquatters register many variants of a popular trademark name or brands in a practice called typosquatting. This makes it more susceptible to being brought by the owner of the trademark especially if the page rank of the website in the domain name is high.

Renewal snatching, alert angling and extension exaggeration are also popular tactics in which a cybersquatter, using automated tools, would wait for the exact moment that a domain name for a popular trademark expires and thus open to the public as a domain name for sale. The cybersquatter then buys the domain name, giving the owner no other option but to buy back the domain name at higher prices. Of course, even if the old owner of the domain name does not buy back the domain name from the cybersquatter, he is still assured of profit as the popular domain name can generate traffic and thus can be resold to other interested parties.

Unlike search engines, a scraper site does not direct a visitor to the original site where the content came from. Scraper sites do not respect copyright and repost content without including the original authors’ name and information. In fact, the main purpose of a scraper site is to spam search engines for profit in affiliate programs like AdSense. Because of this, sites that are content rich and open to the public are the most vulnerable to this type of activity.

MFA
Some scraper sites are called MFA’s or Made for Adsense. This designation comes from the fact that these websites were created for the purpose of generating clicks on advertisements found within it. Of course, scraper sites create the problem of diluting search results and providing unsatisfactory search results to users by generating redundant results. Because of this, search engines are implementing ways to remove scraper sites from the search results.

Link Farms
Scraper sites are also sometimes referred to as link farms because of the similarity of the goals and tactics. A link farm is basically a collection of web pages connected to each other by hyperlinks. This spams the search engines and increases the ranking of such web pages. Link farms are, however, different from other websites that selectively swap links. With the new algorithms for determining page ranks, link farming has also evolved into other forms of spam indexing or spamming the search engines.

Legal Concerns
The activities of this kind of sites have raised legal concerns within the Internet community because scraper sites hijack content without the knowledge of the original author and without concern for copyright laws. Copyright law states that users who publish other people’s work from blogs, forums, websites, etc should not only ask for the permission of the original author but include pertinent information on his repost as well like the license information, author name, etc.

Modus Operandi
Scraper sites usually target other websites or RSS feeds based on their ranking on the search results given specific keywords. They then copy bits of text containing the keyword from the original site that ranked high in the search results. Because these scraper sites copy only bits and pieces of content, the advertisements on the website are usually the only comprehensible content in the webpage, thus inducing the visitors to click on these as these are the only words in the webpage that looks like they can deliver the content the user needs.

Because these scraper sites are so easy to set up with the use of bots specifically designed for scraping web pages and compiling thousands of pages based on popular keywords, owners of these sites have profited much from this type of operations.

Address munging is done by making the email address unreadable to such harvester programs but understandable to humans. An example of this is the email address anonymous@yahoo.com that’s posted as anonymous at yahoo dot com over forums and chat rooms. This prevents the email address from being picked up by bots and included in a spamming operation. It also ensures that the correct information is passed to the target audience.

Drawbacks of Email Address Munging
One of the disadvantages of email address munging is the fact that a few people will still misunderstand the munging method that you have used and thus will misunderstand the address you have written. This problem certainly leads to some information and perhaps even opportunities lost.

Of course, there is also that issue that says munging does not take away the root of the problem, that it is just a quick fix. Moreover, some bots have found a way to read munged email addresses.

Another drawback of email munging is the fact that it prevents the free flow of information in the internet. It also goes against some of the recommendations regarding forum and bulletin board formats. Additionally, munging creates confusion in the munger’s mind on the matter of which emails he has or hasn’t munged.

Munging Options
Other options that you have for protecting your email address include posting the email address as a jpeg or gif image, using text logo as the email address format, posting the email address in a jumbled format and using CSS to restore it to the proper sequence, etc. It must be noted, though, that some of these alternatives – say, the jpeg email format – may prevent people with disability from getting the correct info.

Going after the Root
Of course, none of these options are 100% reliable and it is true that these only treat the symptoms of an Internet threat rather than cure it. Current email address munging methods may work now but they may soon be deciphered by the increasingly intelligent bots that have the ability to decipher and clean mugged email addresses. For this reason, it may be better to learn the methods of reporting these kinds of activities to the right authorities. Today, there are email providers that have the spam report option built in. There are also Internet abuse authorities such as adcomplain.pl that are effective in tracing bulk emailers and responding to such abuse.

Before reporting these bulk emailers, however, it would be best if you were to compile as much information as possible such as frequency of emails, types of emails, etc. to help the authorities respond as quickly as possible.

A New Technique for Google Bombing
A new technique for Google bombing is to append the phrase you wish to bomb with the the target URL using the ‘#’ or ‘?’ operators.

Let’s say that you were trying to Google bomb this web page with the phrase “SEO dorks”.

You would build your Google bomb like this:

Google’s Response to Google Bombs
Google will likely not do anything about Google bombs, because they are a reflection of the way that Google is supposed to work. Each inbound link to a web page counts as a “vote” for that web page for the words in the anchor text. To Google, a Google bomb is simply hundreds or thousands of “votes” saying that John Kerry is a waffler.

Google Bombs and Other Search Engines
Although the name Google bomb has stuck, is is possible to mount the same sort of attack on any search engine, such as Yahoo, MSN, AltaVista, or AllTheWeb.

Search engine bombs are discussed in the context of Google more than other search engines for several reasons:

• Google is considerably more popular than any other search engine
• The Google search page I’m Feeling Lucky button makes Google bombing more “fun”
• Google promotes the link popularity system heavily in their marketing campaigns

• A group of web pages which share links with one another
• A directory which requires reciprocal links

Link farm is a term which is generally used in a negative context and link farming is considered by many to be a black hat technique.

There is much talk about the major search engines penalizing link farms, although there is no hard proof.

In cloaking, human visitors are shown the actual web page, but search engines are shown a web page which is full of spammy SEP techniques such as keyword stuffing.

Cloaking by User Agent
To effectively cloak a web page, the web server must be able to determine if the visitor is a human or a search engine.

One technique for doing this is to look at the user agent field of the HTTP request.

The user agent field for a human visitor usually lists what web browser software is being used, such as:

“Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)”

The user agent field for a search engine usually identifies the search engine robot, such as this user agent field for Yahoo Slurp:

“Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Yahoo! Slurp; http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearch/slurp)”

Cloaking by IP Address or Hostname
Another technique for identifying traffic from search engines is to cloak traffic coming from the domains of search engine operators or the IP addresses used by search engine operators.

For example, web site traffic from 64.62.82.x is most likely to be a visit from Googlebot.

The Benefits of Cloaking
Cloaking does work in many cases to achieve improved SERPs.

Detecting Cloaking
One technique for determing if a web page is using cloaking is to view Google’s cache of that web page. Unless the web page has turned off Google caching, the Google cache will show you how Googlebot sees the web page. If the web page has turned off Google caching, that is also a possible indicator that cloaking is in use.

It is also possible to set your own user agent to spoof the user agent of a well known web robot, such as Googlebot. If the web page is using user agent cloaking, you will then see the cloaked page that is normally shown to Googlebot.

You can modify your user agent in Opera by selecting Tools > Preferences > Network, and then changing the “Browser identification” setting.

The User Agent Switcher Extension will enable you to change your user agent in Forefox and Mozilla.

Another good tool for detecting cloaking is WANNABrowser. WANNABrowser is a web-proxy which will show you the HTML source for any page on the Internet, while letting you set your user agent.

The Penalities for Cloaking
Cloaking is in violation of most search engine policies and is very likely to get your site banned.

Quoting from Google Information for Webmasters:

To preserve the accuracy and quality of our search results, Google may permanently ban from our index any sites or site authors that engage in cloaking to distort their search rankings.

Search engines have not been very good at automatically detecting and banning cloaking, but your competitors can easily send a spam SEO report to the major search engines.

A web site which sells sporting goods might, for example, create one page which is focused completely on sleeping bags. The sleeping bags page would be designed to rank highly in the SERPS for the term “sleeping bags”. Once the user found this doorway page, however, he would be quickly converted to the main web site of the sporting good company.

Redirection from Doorway Pages
Doorway pages often utilize the the meta refresh tag to automatically whisk users away to the actual content page.

Here is a meta refresh tag which waits zero seconds and then transfers the visitor to another web page:

Other doorway pages are simply full of links to the actual content pages. Any link the user selects will take them to the real web site.

Why Doorway Pages Can Help SEO
Doorway pages are designed to focus on one specific search phrase. That search phrase is used in the page name, the page title, the page description, the keywords, the <H1> tag, the <H2> tags, <H3> tags, bold text, italicized text, and repetitively all over the body text.

Why Doorway Pages are Bad
Doorway pages are considered bad SEO by many people because they insert an annoying and unnecessary step between the user and the destination.

Without doorway pages, the user would search for what he wanted, click the link, and be at his destination.

With doorway pages, the user searches for what he wants, clicks the link, ends up at a doorway page, and must then either click or wait to get to an actual content page.

In addition, because doorway pages are heavily optimized for search engines, they are often extremely unattractive and useless to human visitors.

Search Engine Policies towards Doorway Pages
Google’s statement on doorway pages is:

Avoid “doorway” pages created just for search engines, or other “cookie cutter” approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.

MSN, Yahoo, and AskJeeves do not specifically mention doorway pages in their search engine policies.

Doorway Page Generators
Many web sites advertise software to automatically generate doorway pages. These software packages tend to create very small pages which are not optimized very well!

Worse, these packages will often insert links back to creators of these software packages. In addition, using some of the web-based automatic doorway page generators will subscribe you to e-mail spam lists.

A Doorway Page By Any Other Name
Doorway pages exist under many names. These names are often the inventions of marketeers who try to sell SEO with doorway pages while convincing their customers that they have discovered a newer better twist on this old technique.

• Jump Pages
• Portal Pages
• Bridge Pages

There is no generally accepted definition for black hat SEO. What may be considered appropriate by one webmaster may not be considered appropriate by another webmaster. In addition to personal differences, guidelines for appropriate conduct vary across web site categories. What might be considered acceptable for a web site in the gambling industry may not be equally acceptable for a health care web site.

Here are several guidelines for determining if a technique should be considered Black Hat SEO.

Search Engine Operator Policies
Many search engine operators, such as Google, MSN, and Yahoo, publish policies and guidelines which document what they feel are appropriate and inappropriate SEO techniques.

One school of thought believes that if you stay within these guidelines, you are not practicing black hat SEO.

One difficulty with this model is that the search engine operator guidelines tend to be extremely vague and non-technical. Another difficulty is that the guidelines differ between search engines. For example, Google prefers 301 redirects, while Yahoo prefers doorway pages which inform the user of the new URL.

The Property Rights Approach
The property rights approach to the question of black hat SEO believes that anything you do with your own property is acceptable, but that you should leave other peoples property alone.

By this standard, most on-page SEO techniques are acceptable, but off-page SEO techniques like guestbook spamming should be considered black hat SEO.

This is probably the most reasonable and fair guideline for determining acceptable SEO practices, but it does have some limitations. It does not, for example, address keyword spamming or cloaking.

The Visitor Value Approach
This school of thought believes that SEO techniques which do not add value to the visitors experience belong to the school of black hat SEO.

This approach labels on-page techniques such as hidden text, micro-text, and ALT text spamming as black hat SEO.

The visitor value approach has benefits not only in defining black hat SEO, but also in promoting general practices for good web site design. Black hat SEO practices which violate this guideline may result in a boost to your SERPs, but they will not lead to return visitors or natural incoming links.

The Unnatural Rankings Approach
This school of thought believes that anything which causes a web page to rank unnaturally highly for its keywords is black hat SEO.

Unfortunately, there is no generally accepted definition for “unnaturally highly”!

If followed to its logical conclusion, this school of though considers all SEO to be black hat SEO.

Under this approach, even the use of proper heading tags (H1, H2, H3) can be considered black hat SEO.

Webmasters place Google AdSense JavaScript code on their web pages and Google AdSense serves advertisements based upon the content of the web page.

Some webmasters are either not accepted into the Google AdSense program, or do not wish to do business with Google.

Check the Syntax of your robots.txt

Bad Robots

Some web robots will use up considerable amounts of bandwidth and system resources, while returning little or no practical benefit to the web site owner.

How do webmasters track referrers?
Most webmaster use a web site statistics reporting tool such as AWStats or Webalizer. Some webmasters (either purposefully or unintentionally) make the reports generated by these tools publically available.

One of the reports generated by most web site statistics reporting tools is a “top referrers” report. This reports lists the remote web pages that have sent the most visitors to the web site.

How are referrers used to spam?
In most web site statistics reporting tools, each top referrer is listed with a link.

That link becomes a backlink to the top referring page.

Some unscrupulous webmasters create phony requests of other web pages, just to get a spot in the top referrers list.

This technique is utilized to artifically boost Page Rank.

Unfortunately, this technique has several negative consequences:

• It uses resources (bandwitch, disk space, CPU cycles, etc…) of the “victim” web site.
• It fills the logfiles of the victim website with trash, making them useles for statitical analysis.
• It “steals” backlinks from the actual top referrers.

Preventing referrer spam
The easiest method to avoid becoming a target of referrer spam is to not publish your web site statistics publically.

If you wish to publish your web site statistics publically, you can manually ban web sites which use you for referrer spam.

If you have already been a victim of referrer spam, there are tools available to clean the spam entries from your web server log files. One such tool is Referrer Spam Fucker 3000.
